Metakaku® Pearls: A Hong Kong invention for the global pearl farming industry

世界珍珠

The problem of counterfeit goods being mixed with genuine goods has been a persistent problem in human history. After two generations of hard work and more than ten years of unremitting research and development, we have finally succeeded in solving this thousand-year-old problem.

In June 2013, we launched our pearl ID card technology called Metakaku® to the world at the International Jewellery Show. This is our first generation technology that enables pearl identification by embedding a tiny RFID wireless tag into the pearl nucleus. We restarted the pearl farming industry in Hong Kong, which was our first step since 1996.

Subsequently, we promoted the Yuanhe® technology to seawater pearl farmers around the world, including Paspaley and Autore in Australia, Concorde in Indonesia, and Robert Wan in Japan and Tahiti. The successful promotion of this technology marks another important milestone for us in the pearl farming industry.

During this process, we received support from the Logistics and Supply Chain Multi-Technology Research and Development Center (LSCM) and successfully developed the first generation of pearl database.

The following are reports from the past decade.

Although it has been out for two years, on May 31, 2025, we just released the second generation of Yuanhe Technology at the Hangzhou Jewelry Show.

The first and second generation MetaCore®

The first generation of MetaCore® technology uses Ultra High Frequency ( UHF) radio frequency identification technology for data communication. Its main advantage is that it can achieve long-distance transmission. This technology has brought revolutionary progress to the global logistics industry and warehouse management. In pearl farming, we can easily read the pearl information inside the pearl oyster, and in inventory management, we can quickly record it. Because our system follows international standards, the content is highly consistent. The only disadvantage is its high power consumption.

The second generation MetaCore® technology uses high frequency wireless near field communication technology for communication. It has a wide range of applications and can be seen everywhere in daily life, such as Octopus and credit cards. Despite its wide application, its transmission speed is slow and the label is relatively large, so it is not suitable for inventory management. However, since this technology provides greater flexibility in data content, it is very suitable for customized needs.
