Pearl Nucleus - Fukui Pearl Knowledge Sharing

There are two types of shell pearls commonly referred to in the market. Most of them are made by pressing shell powder, which is easy to control production quality. They can never be compared with cultured pearls.

In addition, there is also a type of pearl that is made by polishing the original pearl oyster shell. This type of shell pearl generally has the texture of the shell layer. This is also the method of making pearl nuclei. Pearl nuclei are mainly used in seawater pearl farming. They are implanted in oysters to serve as the basis for attaching mother-of-pearl. Shells have the same composition as pearls and similar structures, so they are less likely to be rejected by pearl oysters.

At present, the industry has always selected freshwater pearl oyster shells, such as China's tubercle-back oysters and the United States' Mississippi River oysters, which are cheaper than ocean pearl oysters, have larger and thicker shells, and are easier to produce ideal pearl nucleus size.

However, even with a round pearl nucleus as the basis, the shape of the harvested pearls may change due to various reasons. For example, bubbles are left in the wound when the nucleus is implanted; or after the large pearl oyster is harvested, the nucleus is implanted again to cultivate pearls. Therefore, round or nearly round pearls are still rare treasures and are expensive.

The main pearls in the jewelry market today are all cultured, including freshwater pearls, South Sea white pearls, South Sea gold pearls, Tahitian black pearls and Japanese seawater pearls. The following articles will introduce them one by one.
