Seawater pearl origin and varieties:
Japan - Akoya pearls (Marshmallow oyster) 4.5-8.5 mm
Hong Kong - Hong Kong pearls (Marshy oyster) 6-8.5 mm
Indonesia - South Sea Golden Pearl (Golden Lip Oyster) 10-20 mm
Australia - South Sea White Pearl (White Pearl Oyster) 10-20 mm
Tahiti - Tahitian black pearl (black lipped oyster) 9-14 mm
Freshwater pearl origin and varieties:
China - Freshwater Pearls (Pond Butterfly Mussels)

Each freshwater pearl mussel can produce dozens of pearls , while each seawater pearl mussel can only produce one pearl. The pearls will not squeeze each other, so the finished products are round. Since most freshwater pearls are cultured without nuclei, they have different shapes, including oblate, rice-shaped, teardrop-shaped, oval, nearly round, and round ones are rare.
The pearl family includes many types. What are the varieties of pearls? According to the reasons for their formation, pearls are divided into natural pearls and cultured pearls. Cultured pearls are further divided into cultured freshwater pearls and cultured seawater pearls. However, they have been simplified to what we call freshwater pearls and seawater pearls. Most of the pearls on the market are cultured pearls, so there is no need to emphasize the so-called culture. Next, we will introduce the varieties of pearls:
The varieties of seawater pearls are divided into three categories:
Akoya Pearls:
Akoya pearls are not freshwater varieties. It is the general name for pearls cultured in the waters of Japan. Another name is "Japanese pearls". Akoya pearls are cultured by the scientific name "Pinctada fucata martensii". In fact, Akoya pearls can be cultivated in the waters of Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Australia, and other countries. Due to the cultivation and processing technology over the past 100 years, coupled with effective marketing, Akoya pearls have made Japan a global leader in the pearl industry. Moreover, this name is also synonymous with high-quality pearls.
We, Fukui Pearl , are a marine pearl culturist in Hong Kong. Through years of scientific training and pearl insertion technology, we maintain the sustainable ecological growth of Martensii oysters in the sea.
South Sea Pearls : South Sea pearls are seawater cultured pearls produced from large pearl oysters such as white lip oysters and golden lip oysters. The origin of this type of pearl is generally in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, including Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines and northern Australia. The colors are gold and white. The characteristics are that they are large, white and silver. This type of oyster cannot be cultivated artificially and has very strict requirements on the water area. Therefore, the production is scarce and the price is relatively high. It is loved by many European ladies.
Tahitian black pearls : are black Tahitian cultured pearls with natural dark colors, showing unique colors such as transparent green, transparent blue, and transparent silver gray. They are cultivated in the natural waters of French Polynesia. The dark color of the pearls comes from organic pigments, carotenoids and porphyrin deposited in conchiolin. Like South Sea cultured pearls, Tahitian cultured pearls are famous for their large size, thick pearl layer, natural color and difficulty in cultivation. Both South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls are very valuable in the market.
Chinese freshwater pearls: Molluscs that produce freshwater pearls can be found in rivers and lakes in many parts of the world, and the production varies from place to place. China is the world's largest freshwater pearl producer, accounting for more than 90% of the world's production. Chinese freshwater pearls are famous for their varied shapes and colorful colors. Round freshwater pearls account for a small number of them, and the colors are mainly white, pink , purple, etc. Because the production is higher than that of seawater pearls, the price is affordable and they are accepted by the public.
When choosing pearls, people should make their choices based on their preferences, wearing occasions and purchasing power.
